German Medal Award for Attorney Joel Levi
The German ambassador to Israel Dr. h.c. Harald Kindermann has awarded on July 24th 2007 the Distinguished Service Cross of first class of the service medal of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Israeli attorney Joel Levi.
Mr. Levi operates a law firm in Ramat Gan since 1964 and since 1990 is dealing mainly with claims regarding works of art and other properties seized by Nazi regime. Mr. Levi is an active member and one of the founders of the Israeli-German lawyers association, and was a chairman of the association from 1990 to 2000.
In the Israeli bar Joel Levi is the chairman of the committee for the relations with the German-language countries.
Attorney Levi was the main motivator for the project "Lawyers without Rights" concerning the fate of Jewish attorneys in Germany after 1933.
The initiative of Mr. Levi led to a publication of a book on the subject and then to an exhibition, which was presented in 1998 in the Jewish culture center in Berlin and then at further places in Germany as well as in Israel, USA and Canada.
